VCE English Language 3/4 Tutoring in Melbourne and Online

English Language 3 and 4 rewards precision: the right metalanguage, the right example, the right argument under exam conditions. You'll work through informality and formality, then language variation and identity in Australia, with essay strategy and exam technique built in from the first week rather than bolted on at the end. Every Area of Study is heavily reinforced, so you walk into the exam with analysis that is fast, accurate and genuinely your own.

Why Contour exists

We were students not long ago. We remember what was broken.

Letter from the co-founders
Melbourne, est. 2020

Dear students,

Your marks depended on which teacher you got. So in 2020 we built what we wish we'd had.

This is our life's work.

Checks, because we wasted months guessing what to revise. Invigilated mocks, because the kitchen table teaches you nothing about the clock. Free consultations, because charging means students ask too late.

Come sit in a class. The first weeks are free.

See you in class,

Enrolling in Contour provides a clear advantage in the UCAT. While success is not limited to those in the program, Contour makes the path to it far more focused and effective. From core strategies to personalised guidance, they tailor support to each student's needs. The ultimate goal of the UCAT is to feel confident and prepared - and Contour consistently delivers that experience, not just for me, but for countless students year after year.

Contour helped me understand the UCAT better and allowed me to hone my skills in a comfortable learning environment. The tutors also were super nice and helpful making it less daunting to ask questions. :) Would recommend to other students.

Honestly you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not joining Contour for their UCAT course. From skill set to mindset they've got you covered. Going into my UCAT prep I had the motivation to do well but with something as obscure as the UCAT.

Ramodh and the entire Contour team are so insightful. Lessons are so well formulated and structured, and flowed well from one to the next to truly deepen understanding, familiarity and comfort with the exam. Contour truly encapsulates everything I could want in a tutoring course -- I couldn't imagine anything more well-rounded for the UCAT journey.

I did Maths Methods 3/4 at Contour for Year 12 and it helped me with so much, the resources provided are top tier and my tutor, Qing was really helpful and sweet and made the classes entertaining as well as educational.

Taught by tutors who sat English Language, and beat it

Every English Language tutor here scored 45+ raw in this exact exam, most within the last few years. The SAC pressure, the time crunch, the setting-out that earns marks: they remember it, because it was theirs. It's how they'll get you there too.

Meet Chanul Pathirana

Head of VCE English Language

Hey there!

I'm Chanul, and I'm really excited to see what you'll achieve with Contour's support in the English Language program!

I know that English Language can feel foreign and difficult, so my mission is to demistify the confusion around this subject, and to ensure that you'll be able to thoroughly enjoy it, just like I did :)

English Language is exciting, with something new in every text and essay prompt. That's why our course is designed to teach you how to thrive in that ambiguity!

Our tutors started where you are now: some thrived in the subject throughout Year 12, and others developed their skills later on.

No matter what your own story is, we care deeply about your individual progress, and we know that everyone's progress looks different.

Welcome to the English Language program, and I look forward to meeting you!

Hey! In my analytical commentary, why does the speaker keep using “like” and “you know”?

9:47 PM

Think about function, not just the feature. In spontaneous speech, what are those discourse particles doing for the speaker and for the relationship with the listener?

They buy planning time and build rapport! So it links back to the informal context. That clicks now, thanks!!

01

About VCE English Language 3/4

How difficult is English Language 3/4?

−

Harder than 1/2, mostly because of precise metalanguage under time pressure, which is why we drill analytical commentaries. Informal and formal language, language and identity; the workshop is where it becomes manageable.

Do you follow my school's SAC order?

+

We teach ahead of the standard sequence and run SAC-order revision: your revision weeks match your school's calendar even when topic order differs.

Is English Language 3/4 a prerequisite for university courses?

+

Yes. English Language 3/4 meets the English prerequisite for most Victorian university courses, just as English does. Minimum study scores vary by course, so check VTAC for exact requirements.

Is English Language 3/4 worth taking?

+

Yes, if you’d rather analyse how language works than write text responses. It meets the VCE English requirement just as English does, and your score counts towards your ATAR.

02

About the program

How much does VCE Methods tutoring cost?

+

One weekly fee, shown once in the pricing section above, billed per term. It includes classes, workshops, all resources, mock exams, consultations and the text line. Nothing is sold separately.

How do classes work each week?

+

A 2-hour class that teaches ahead of school, then a 2-hour workshop where you practise under exam conditions. Both recorded, both included.

How does the free trial work?

+

Book in two minutes, experience your first week free, your class and your workshop, then decide with zero pressure. No payment details needed to trial.

Can I join mid-year and catch up?

+

Yes. Most students who join outside January start mid-term. You'll get a catch-up plan, recorded lessons for anything missed, and a consult to map the gap.

Is online the same as in-person?

+

Same tutors, same materials, live, not recordings. Workshops run with tutors in the room digitally. Some students prefer it, some don't. Trial both and pick.

Is a group really as good as 1-on-1?

+

For most students, small groups outperform 1-on-1: real peers to benchmark against, resources built properly once, and a room where everyone is trying. And unlimited 1-on-1 Consultations are included anyway, so it's not group or 1-on-1. You get both.

How will I see my progress?

+

Your marks, homework and mock results live on the Learning Portal, and your parents can see them too.

03

About Contour

Can I trial with a friend?

+

Yes, and if you both join, we'll try to place you in the same class. A third of Contour students joined with a friend.

Will it clash with school and co-curriculars?

+

Classes run across all seven days at most campuses, plus online. Pick times around training, music, work. And every class is recorded.

What happens if I miss a week?

+

Nothing is lost. Every Weekly Class and Weekly Workshop is recorded and uploaded the same night, your Weekly Workbook and Homework are waiting on the portal, and your tutor is one message away on the text line.

Can I join partway through the year?

+

Yes, any time. You start with a personalised catch-up plan, and your Dedicated Tutor tracks it until you're back at pace with the class.

How do the free 1-on-1 Consultations work?

+

Book a 15 or 30 minute video session with a tutor from the portal or the back of any booklet. Unlimited, included in the fee: a weak area, a practice exam, a revision plan, whatever you need.

What happens after the trial?

+

Love it? You continue seamlessly. Not for you? Walk away owing nothing: no card was taken, and nobody calls to talk you around.

The tutors are students, not qualified teachers. Why is that better?

+

For this specific job, recency beats tenure: someone who sat this exam in the last few years remembers what is genuinely hard and what the week before feels like. Then around 5% of applicants survive selection and the Tutor Academy before leading a class. The claim isn't that they're young. It's that they're recent, proven and vetted.

Aren't the results just selection?

+

No entrance exam, nobody turned away on results, and every figure is whole-cohort, never a selected sample. The trial diagnostic will tell you more about your child than our stats will.

My child doesn't want to.

+

That's exactly why the trial is free and obligation-free: let them feel it before anyone commits. What changes minds is almost always the room, peers who care as much as they do.
