VCE English Language 3/4
Area of Study
Informality
You'll develop a deep analytical toolkit for informal language. Working through sociolinguistic variables, lexicology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and discourse, you'll then apply these to both spoken and written informal texts. By the end, you'll be able to analyse informal language across subsystems using appropriate metalanguage, identify paralinguistic features, and write well-structured analytical commentaries and essays on informal texts. Three SAC revision weeks close out the module.

Formality
The counterpart to Module 1. You'll examine the features of formal language, including lexical choice, nominalisation, passive voice, modality, and hedging, across both written and spoken contexts. You'll develop your analytical commentary and essay writing skills through exposure to formal media examples and high-quality sample responses. By the end, you'll be able to analyse formal language with precision and write extended responses that move between subsystems fluently. Two SAC revision weeks are included.
Area of Study
Language Variation in Australian Society
This module focuses on how language reflects and shapes Australian identity. You'll examine Standard Australian English, regional and social dialects, ethnolects, accents, and Aboriginal Australian English, and explore how attitudes toward these varieties reveal broader social and cultural values. By the end, you'll be able to write analytical essays that integrate identity analysis with subsystem-level metalanguage and approach SAQ tasks with a structured, evidence-based method. Two revision weeks close the module.
Area of Study
Individual and Group Identities
The final content module brings Units 3 and 4 together through the lens of identity. You'll examine how individual and group identities are constructed and negotiated through language, including overt and covert norms in group language use. Two SAC revision weeks prepare you for the end-of-unit assessment.

A structured exam preparation program covering all four areas of study. You'll work through dedicated revision sessions for Informality, Formality, Australian English and Identity, with a focus on exam approach, analytical commentary technique, and essay planning. The module closes with Exam Priming before the final examination period.
