VCE Biology 3/4
Area of Study
Nucleic Acids, Proteins and DNA Manipulation
You'll start by building a molecular understanding of how genetic information is stored, expressed, and regulated. Topics include the structure of nucleic acids, gene expression, the trp operon, protein function, and enzymes. You'll then move into the exciting world of DNA manipulation, covering key biotechnology techniques, CRISPR-Cas9, recombinant plasmids, and the ethical considerations surrounding these technologies. The module closes with two revision weeks.
Area of Study
Biochemical Pathways
This module explores how living things convert energy. You'll examine the biochemical pathways of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in detail, including anaerobic fermentation and real-world applications such as biofuel production. You'll also develop your practical investigation and experimental design skills. Two revision weeks are included, as well as a full Unit 3 revision session to consolidate everything before moving forward.
Area of Study
Immunity and Public Health
One of the most applied areas of VCE Biology. You'll move from the basics of disease and infection through the full immune response, covering the innate immune system, adaptive immunity (both humoral and cell-mediated), vaccines, and immunotherapy. You'll also examine how public health systems work to manage disease at a population level. Two revision weeks round out the module.

Changes in Species Over Time
The final content module covers how species change across generations. You'll explore how allele frequencies shift in populations, how new species arise through speciation, what the fossil record and molecular evidence tells us about evolution, and how humans fit within the broader story of primate evolution. Two revision weeks are included.
Revision
Exam Preparation
A structured exam preparation program covering every area of study. You'll work through dedicated revision sessions for Nucleic Acids and Proteins, DNA Manipulation, Biochemical Pathways, Immunity, Applications of Immunity, Evolution, and Experimental Design, before tackling explanation question technique and full walkthroughs of recent VCAA exams including 2023, 2024, and 2025. The programme closes with an Exam Priming Week.
