English Language Units 1 and 2 give you a completely new way of looking at the language you use every day. You'll develop a precise metalanguage toolkit and apply it to language acquisition, the history of English, and the way English varies and changes across cultures. Our programme builds your analytical commentary and essay writing skills from the ground up, with a headstart series to prepare you for Units 3 and 4.

Area of Study
The Nature and Functions of Language
You'll build the metalanguage foundation that underpins all of English Language. Starting with language as a meaning-making system, you'll work through lexicology and morphology, phonetics and phonology, syntax, discourse, and semantics. You'll then apply these tools to analytical commentaries. By the end, you'll be able to identify and explain sociolinguistic features using the International Phonetic Alphabet, classify phrase types, and write analytical commentary introductions with confidence. Two SAC revision weeks close out the module.
Area of Study
Language Acquisition
This module explores how language is learned. You'll examine the developmental stages of first and additional language learners, analyse speech sound production in early language development, and explore multilingualism and code switching. You'll then develop your essay writing skills, working through structured responses on language acquisition. By the end, you'll be able to analyse acquisition using appropriate metalanguage and write well-structured analytical essays. Two SAC revision weeks are included.
Area of Study
English Across Time
A fascinating look at how the English language has evolved. You'll trace the roots of English within the Indo-European language family and examine phonological, morphological, lexical, and semantic change across time. Topics include the influence of key inventions like the printing press and the internet, linguistic theories including prescriptivism and descriptivism, and the development of Australian English. By the end, you'll be able to analyse language change using precise historical and linguistic frameworks. Two SAC revision weeks close the module.
Area of Study
Englishes in Contact
The final content module explores how English interacts with other languages and cultures around the world. You'll examine global and World Englishes, pidgins and creoles, language shift and reclamation, identity and power, and the distinctive features of Aboriginal Australian English and Indigenous languages. You'll develop your essay writing skills on attitudes toward English in contact situations. The module closes with an eight-week headstart series preparing you for English Language Units 3 and 4.
