VCE Mathematical Methods 3/4
Area of Study
Functions, Relations and Polynomials
You'll consolidate and extend your understanding of functions and algebra. Topics include maximal domain and range, transformations, coordinate geometry, and polynomials including the Factor and Remainder Theorems. By the end, you'll be able to find transformed function rules, determine midpoints and distances, and identify roots and unknowns in polynomial functions. Each topic is paired with a dedicated exam skills session.
Area of Study
Differential Calculus
A thorough treatment of differentiation and its applications. You'll cover instantaneous and average rates of change, limits, continuity, tangents and normals, applications of differentiation, families of functions, and an introduction to pseudocode. By the end, you'll be able to differentiate a wide range of functions, apply calculus to curve sketching and optimisation, and work through technology-based question types. Includes exam skills sessions throughout.
Area of Study
Exponentials, Logarithms and Circular Functions
This module builds fluency with two of the most important function families in Methods. You'll revisit exponentials and logarithms before working through circular functions in depth, including exact values and solving advanced trigonometric equations. Three SAC 1 revision weeks close out the module.
Area of Study
Integration
You'll develop your integration skills from antidifferentiation through to definite integrals and their applications. Topics include antiderivatives, approximating areas, finding areas bounded by curves, and calculating the average value of a function. By the end, you'll be able to evaluate integrals using a range of techniques and apply integration to solve geometric and motion problems. Includes a dedicated exam skills session.
Area of Study
Probability and Statistics
A comprehensive treatment of probability and statistical inference. You'll work through discrete random variables, binomial distribution, continuous random variables, normal distribution, and sampling distributions. By the end, you'll be able to calculate probabilities using exact and approximate distributions, apply the normal distribution, and find confidence intervals for population proportions. Each topic includes an exam skills session.
Revision
Exam Preparation
A structured end-of-year revision program. You'll revisit all areas of study in a targeted sequence, covering Probability and Statistics, Functions and Relations, Circular Functions, Differential Calculus, and Integration, before completing full practice exam preparation.
