VCE Chemistry 1/2
Area of Study
Properties of Chemicals
You'll develop a strong foundation in atomic structure and chemical bonding. Starting with models of the atom and periodic table trends, you'll work through metallic bonding, covalent lattices, ionic compounds, and covalent molecules. You'll also explore polarity, intermolecular bonding, solubility, and the principles of chromatography. By the end, you'll be able to write electron configurations, draw Lewis structures, predict molecular geometry, and explain why substances dissolve or separate the way they do. Two revision sessions are included throughout.
Area of Study
Stoichiometry and Organic Chemistry
This module introduces the quantitative side of chemistry. You'll master mole calculations, stoichiometry, limiting reagents, and percentage composition before diving into organic chemistry. Topics include functional groups, isomerism, addition polymerisation, and the sustainability of organic chemicals. By the end, you'll be able to perform molar calculations, balance and interpret chemical equations, and name and draw organic molecules using IUPAC conventions. A Unit 1 revision session closes out the module.

Water
Water sits at the heart of chemistry. This module covers the unique properties of water, acid-base chemistry using the Bronsted-Lowry model, pH calculations, and an introduction to redox reactions. You'll then move into spontaneous redox reactions and galvanic cells. By the end, you'll be able to apply pH calculations, predict whether redox reactions will occur using the Electrochemical Series, and explain how galvanic cells generate electrical energy. Two revision sessions are included.

Measurement and Analysis
The practical and analytical heart of Unit 2. You'll cover concentration calculations, volumetric analysis, dilution factors, titration techniques and calculations, titration curves, experimental design, and a range of analytical techniques including gravimetric analysis, colorimetry, and UV-visible spectroscopy. By the end, you'll be able to design and critique experiments, perform complex analytical calculations, and interpret results with confidence.

Get ahead on next year's content. This module works through key Chemistry Units 3 and 4 topics early, covering moles and stoichiometry, redox and galvanic cells, organic chemistry, new functional groups and reactions, redox titration, chromatography, and experimental design and green chemistry. You'll arrive at Units 3 and 4 with a meaningful head start.
