Physics Units 3 and 4 cover some of the most intellectually exciting content in VCE science. VCE Physics 3/4
Area of Study
Motion
You'll start with a rigorous treatment of mechanics. Topics include kinematics, projectile motion, Newton's laws, circular motion, momentum, energy, springs and oscillations. By the end, you'll be able to apply SUVAT equations, analyse projectile and circular motion problems, explain Newton's three laws in complex scenarios, and solve problems involving conservation of momentum and energy. Closes with a full Area of Study revision week.
Area of Study
Fields
A comprehensive treatment of gravitational, electric, and magnetic fields. You'll move from field diagrams and force calculations through to electromagnetic induction, Lenz's Law, generators, photovoltaic cells, transformers, and power transmission. By the end, you'll be able to sketch and interpret field diagrams, apply field equations in calculations, and explain how electromagnetic induction underpins modern electricity generation and distribution.
Area of Study
Waves and Light
This module covers wave behaviour in depth. You'll explore wave fundamentals, standing waves, diffraction and interference patterns, and Young's Double Slit Experiment. You'll then move into the quantum world, covering the photoelectric effect, matter waves, atomic theory, and wave-particle duality. Two special relativity sessions close out the content. By the end, you'll be able to apply wave equations, explain experimental evidence for quantum theory, and describe the implications of special relativity.
Area of Study
Practical Investigation and Circuits
You'll develop your experimental skills through an Extended Practical Investigation, and consolidate your understanding of electricity and circuits, including Faraday's Law applications and power transmission. This module prepares you for the school-assessed component of the course while strengthening your analytical and report-writing abilities.
Revision
Exam Preparation
A structured revision program covering all areas of study. You'll work through Motion, Fields, Waves and Light, and Quantum Physics with targeted exam preparation sessions, before completing full practice exams and developing your approach to high-mark extended response questions.
