VCE Mathematical Methods 1/2
Area of Study
Linear, Quadratics and Polynomials
You'll establish the algebraic foundations that underpin all of Mathematical Methods. Starting with linear equations and coordinate geometry, you'll move through quadratics and then polynomials. By the end, you'll be able to solve and graph linear equations and inequalities, find factorised forms of quadratics, and work with polynomial long division. Each topic is paired with a dedicated exam skills session.
Area of Study
Functions, Relations and Transformations
This module develops your understanding of how functions behave and transform. You'll cover hyperbolas, domain and range, and then apply transformation notation to shift, stretch, and reflect functions. By the end, you'll be able to identify the domain and range of a wide variety of functions and apply transformation rules fluently. Includes dedicated exam skills sessions for each topic.
Area of Study
Circular Functions and Exponentials
You'll develop fluency with the trigonometric and exponential functions that feature heavily throughout Methods. Topics include exact values, general solutions, graphing sine, cosine, and tangent functions, exponentials, and logarithms. By the end, you'll be able to evaluate exact trigonometric values, solve general equations, and work confidently with exponential and logarithmic expressions. Each topic includes an exam skills session.
Area of Study
Rates of Change and Differentiation
An introduction to calculus. You'll start with rates of change and limits, then move into continuity and differentiability. From there, you'll apply differentiation to tangents and normals, and explore optimisation problems. By the end, you'll be able to find derivatives from first principles, apply differentiation rules, and use calculus to solve real-world optimisation problems. Closes with two dedicated calculus revision weeks.

Further Differentiation and Integration
You'll extend your calculus skills to more complex functions and introduce integration. Topics include the product and quotient rules, antidifferentiation, and definite integrals, including approximations of area under a curve. By the end, you'll be able to differentiate composite and combined functions, evaluate indefinite and definite integrals, and calculate areas bounded by functions. Includes an exam skills session for each topic.

Probability and Combinatorics
The final module covers the foundations of probability and counting. You'll explore sample spaces, equally likely events, permutations, and combinations. By the end, you'll be able to calculate theoretical probabilities, count arrangements and selections using permutation and combination formulas, and apply these techniques to multi-step problems. Includes dedicated exam skills sessions.

Maths has a reputation for being dry, intimidating, and hard to love - and I've made it my mission to change that. Tutoring is genuinely one of my favourite things to do, and every class is an opportunity to show students that maths can actually be enjoyable.
