Area of Study
Sources of Energy
You'll start by exploring the chemistry of energy. Topics include thermochemistry, enthalpy calculations, gas stoichiometry, calorimetry, fossil fuels, biofuels, and the energy content of food. You'll then move into electrochemistry, covering galvanic cells, fuel cells, primary cells, and Faraday's Laws. By the end, you'll be able to calculate energy changes, evaluate fuel sources for efficiency and sustainability, and analyse how electrochemical cells generate and store energy. Closes with a revision week.
Area of Study
Equilibrium and Electrolysis
This module covers two interconnected areas. You'll start with rates of reaction and chemical equilibrium, applying Le Chatelier's Principle to predict and explain how systems respond to change. You'll then move into electrolysis, covering electrolytic cells, secondary cells, and electroplating. By the end, you'll be able to write equilibrium expressions, predict the effect of changes on equilibrium systems, and explain how electrolysis drives non-spontaneous reactions. Two revision sessions are included.
Area of Study
Organic Chemistry
A deep dive into the chemistry of carbon-based compounds. You'll cover functional groups, isomerism, substitution and addition reactions, atom economy, oxidation and condensation reactions, carbohydrate and lipid chemistry, and qualitative tests for identifying organic compounds. By the end, you'll be able to predict and write reaction pathways, classify organic compounds by their functional groups, and apply reaction types to unfamiliar molecules. Closes with a revision week.
Area of Study
Analytical Techniques
You'll develop the skills to identify and analyse chemical substances using a range of instrumental and classical methods. Topics include mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, combined analytical techniques, purity analysis, concentration calculations, redox titration, chromatography, proteins and chirality, and enzymes and medicinal chemistry. By the end, you'll be able to interpret spectra, design analytical procedures, and apply quantitative techniques to real-world chemical problems. Closes with a revision week.
Revision
Exam Preparation
A structured end-of-year preparation program covering all areas of study. You'll work through dedicated revision sessions for Energy and Calorimetry, Fuels and Spontaneous Redox, Electrolysis, Rates and Equilibrium, Food Chemistry and Spectroscopy, and Experimental Design, before tackling explanation question technique and full walkthroughs of recent VCAA exams. The programme includes an optional workshop week and finishes with the 2025, 2024, and 2024 VCAA Exam Walkthroughs.
