Everything you need to know

The problem

Capable students underperform on exam day

Every year, hard-working students miss out on selective school entry - not because they aren't smart enough, but because the pressure, the stakes, and the environment are like nothing they've experienced before.

Intense time pressure

Each section is strictly timed. Students who haven't practised under real conditions routinely run out of time.

Unfamiliar exam hall

Hundreds of students in silence. For most, it's the first time they've experienced anything like it.

Professional invigilation

Strict rules, formal conduct, no familiar teachers. The environment itself is a test of composure.
Blue and white pencil drawing a blue line on a black background.

High-stakes anxiety

The weight of the moment affects performance. Students who've felt this before are far less rattled on the day.

But imagine your child experiencing the real exam conditions early. Sitting the exam before the real exam.

If your child is aiming for Melbourne High, Mac.Rob, Nossal, or Suzanne Cory, this will be the most valuable day of their preparation.

What you get

A complete simulation - not just a practice paper

We're creating the most authentic exam simulation available. Same hall. Same pressure. Detailed feedback after.

Same exam venue

Your child sits in the same examination hall they'll walk into on the real exam day. Same room, same setup. No surprises when it counts.

Near-identical exam paper

An exclusive Contour-authored exam mirroring the real paper in style, difficulty, and question types across all five sections.

Professional invigilators

Trained invigilators running the session exactly as the real exam. Strict rules, formal conduct, no familiar faces.

A row of focused students writing in notebooks during a class or exam.

Authentic exam schedule

The exact timing your child will experience on the real exam day. No shortcuts, no adjustments.

Personalised feedback report

Section-by-section scores, percentile rankings against all participants, and specific guidance on where to focus before the real exam.

Expert-led review sessions

Specialist teachers walk through every question type the feedback report surfaced - so your child knows not just where to improve, but how.

Subramanian Babu

Head of Selective Entry

Subramanian (Subu) is our Head of Victorian Selective Entry and is a Melbourne High graduate. Subu has authored both mock exams, along with both their written and video solutions. He built the exams from the ground up to reflect the true challenge, scope, and style of the real Selective Entry exam. He will also be personally delivering the exam preparation and review workshops for Signature students.

Under Subu's leadership, Contour has rebuilt Victorian Selective Entry preparation from scratch - not to "game" the system, but to teach the genuine critical thinking and problem solving skills the exam is designed to measure. Subu's goal isn't simply to help students gain entry, it's to ensure every student has the foundation to thrive even after they gain entry!

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Which schools does the exam provide preparation for?

The Victorian Selective Entry Exam is used for entry into Melbourne High School, The Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, Nossal High School, and Suzanne Cory High School.

Is this the same as the real VSE exam?

The simulation is designed to be as close to the real exam as possible - same venue format, trained invigilators, identical time pressure, and exam-grade questions developed through rigorous research and preparation. Because the official VSE is administered by ACER and its content is not publicly released, we cannot guarantee exact replication of real exam questions. What we can guarantee is the most realistic preparation experience available outside of the real exam itself.

Is this suitable for John Monash Science School?

No. The entrance exam for John Monash Science School is a different exam, with a different format and difficulty. This mock is not suitable for students preparing for entry into John Monash Science School.

How is the difficulty compared to the real exam?

Our exam is designed to closely reflect the style, format, and expected difficulty of the real Victorian Selective Entry Exam. Our goal is to give your child the most realistic practice experience possible so they feel confident and prepared on exam day. However, because the real exam content is not publicly released and changes year to year, we cannot guarantee an exact difficulty match.

Does attending improve my child's real exam chances?

Yes - significantly. Students who attend realistic mock exams feel more confident, are less stressed on exam day, and perform closer to their true potential. Mock exams are one of the single most effective preparation tools available.

Who can attend?

The event is open to students in Year 6, Year 7, and Year 8 who are preparing for the Victorian Selective Entry Exam.

My child has never done a selective entry practice exam before. Is this suitable?

Absolutely. This is the perfect first exposure to the full experience, so your child knows what to expect and can prepare more effectively moving forward. We have students of all stages of preparation attending.

Can I book for multiple children?

Yes - you will need to complete a separate registration for each child.

When and where is the event held?

The VSE Simulation Event is held across two weekends at Melbourne Showgrounds, Epsom Road, Ascot Vale VIC 3032. Mock Exam 1 is on Saturday 9 May 2026, and Mock Exam 2 is on Saturday 23 May 2026. Paid public parking is available on-site but fills up quickly - we strongly recommend arriving early. The Route 57 tram stops at the main entrance on Epsom Road (stop 32). Further details will be included in your booking confirmation.

How long is the exam and what does the day look like?

The simulation runs for approximately three hours and mirrors the structure of the real VSE exam: a 60-minute Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning section, a 20-minute break, a 55-minute Reading and Verbal Reasoning section, a short break, and a 40-minute Writing section. Students should plan to be at the venue for approximately four hours in total to allow for check-in and pack-down. Students should arrive by 7:45am for check-in, with the exam starting at approximately 9:30am and dismissal at approximately 1:00pm.

What should my child bring?

Proof of identity (required), printed admission ticket (required), two blue or black pens (required), bottle of water, snacks for the break, and any necessary medications (e.g., asthma puffer).

What counts as valid identification?

Candidates must bring photographic identification that is no more than 18 months old and includes a clear photograph. Examples include: student card issued by your child's current school, student travel card, class photograph (with your child and their name clearly shown), passport (photo must be no more than 18 months old), library card (with photograph), Keypass card, a photograph signed and stamped by your child's current school, or a certified copy of a photograph with your child's name and date of birth.

What items are prohibited during the exam?

The following items are not allowed near candidates during the exam: mobile phones, smart watches, calculators, translation devices or dictionaries, headphones, audio or recording devices of any kind, and notebooks or additional paper. All prohibited items must be left where instructed, with electronic devices switched off and out of reach.

What if we arrive late?

If you arrive after the exam has started, your child may not be allowed to enter. Please plan to arrive at least 45 minutes early to ensure smooth entry.

Can parents stay during the exam?

Parents can accompany their child during drop-off and pick-up but are not allowed into the examination area during the exam, just like the real exam. During Mock 1 (9 May), parents of Year 6 and Year 7 students are invited to attend a free Parent Discovery Workshop covering the application process, exam preparation journey, and how to support your child - featuring guest speakers who are current students at Melbourne High, MacRob, Nossal, and Suzanne Cory. On Mock 2 (23 May), and for Year 8 parents on either day, you are welcome to wait on-site or return at the conclusion of the exam.

Is there parking available?

Yes - Melbourne Showgrounds has nearby paid public parking, but we anticipate it will get very busy. We strongly recommend arriving early.

Is it safe to leave my child at the venue?

Yes - the venue will be fully staffed with professional supervisors, invigilators, first-aid trained personnel, and security staff. Only registered candidates are allowed in the exam hall.

Will photos or videos be taken during the event?

Yes - official photography and videography may occur during the mock exam to capture the experience. By attending, you consent to photos and footage being used for promotional and educational purposes.

What does the score report include?

Every student receives a detailed Score Report within two weeks of their exam date. This includes a percentile ranking against all students and within their year level, performance band classification, a qualitative writing evaluation with specific feedback on structure, argument, and vocabulary, and a gap analysis showing how their result compares to competitive selective entry ranges. Results are delivered digitally via an email and SMS notification when they're ready.

When will we receive results?

Results will be emailed within 2 weeks of the exam, including a full performance breakdown.

Why doesn't the report show how many questions my child got right or wrong per section?

This is a deliberate decision. Rather than a raw question-by-question breakdown, the report focuses on relative positioning and directional insight - where your child stands against the full cohort, which performance band they sit in, and what the gap looks like between their current level and competitive selective entry ranges. This approach keeps the focus on what actually matters: whether your child is on track, and what to do about it.

What are the exam preparation and review packs?

The preparation packs are take-home materials designed to help your child prepare before each exam sitting. The review packs are provided after the exam and contain targeted exercises based on the areas most students found challenging. Together with the 7 Hour Exam Prep Day and 7 Hour Review Day, they form the complete preparation pathway.

What do the Exam Prep Day and Review Day cover?

Both are 7-hour sessions led by our Head of Selective Entry. Each session covers approximately 2 hours of English, 2 hours of Mathematics, and 2 hours of Writing, with tailored advice and plenty of example questions throughout. The Prep Day focuses on exam strategy and question types before your child sits the mock. The Review Day walks through the exam papers in detail so your child knows exactly how to spend their remaining preparation time.

How are the Exam Prep and Review Days delivered?

Both the Exam Prep Day and Review Day are delivered via Zoom in a large group format. Zoom links, along with email and SMS reminders, will be sent out prior to each session. Your child can attend from home - all they need is a laptop or tablet with a stable internet connection.

What happens after the mock exam?

After the exam, every student receives a detailed Score Report within 2 weeks. From there, families interested in ongoing preparation can explore Contour's Selective Entry Tutoring Program and join a free week trial!
