Why should I prepare for my Medical/Dental Entry Interviews ?

Dear Future Medical Student,

We know it’s been a long journey.

The countless practice questions you’ve done.

All the classes you’ve attended.

The tests and exams you’ve sat.

And the hundreds of hours you’ve been at your desk, studying.

We get it.

Not too long ago, we were in the same position as you.

We remember the nerves and excitement you will probably feel.

Where you can almost touch the finish line.

Knowing there’s just one thing left; the interview.

And you’ve worked way too hard to let it be up to chance.

Look, we’re not going to sugarcoat it, the interview can be brutal.

Students with 99.95 ATARs and 3300+ UCATs can miss out.

Every year, some do.

Students with 97 ATARs and 2800+ UCATs can get in.

Every year, some do.

How? Because the 1-hour interview can be worth as much as your ATAR or UCAT.

And for so many students, it’s the reason they miss out.

Almost everyone takes the ATAR and UCAT seriously.

Yet, the interview is neglected far too often.

Students tend to have an ‘I’ll just wing it’ mindset, hoping for the best.

Then they get flustered and feel speechless as they try to answer.

And before they know it, the interview’s over, and they leave feeling deflated.

Why does this matter? Because the difference between success and failure isn’t luck, it’s preparation.

Preparation is what can make the interview your competitive edge.

It’s what can turn everyone else’s biggest weakness into your biggest strength.

There’s no better opportunity to stand-out and gain a huge advantage.

Preparation is what can make the interview your competitive edge.

It’s what will turn everyone else’s biggest weakness into your biggest strength

There’s no better opportunity to stand-out and gain a huge advantage.

Imagine going into your interview feeling prepared and confident.

No more sleepless nights worrying about what you might be asked.

No more dread about whether you’ll freeze under pressure.

Instead, imagine every question you hear feeling near-identical to your practice.

Feel your ideas turning into structured sentences within seconds.

And picture the smile you’ll put on your interviewer’s face.

After spending their day hearing dozens of students say the same thing over and over again, you’ll be the only one with a response they remember.

That’s the future we want to help you create.

Our approach isn’t about stuffing your head with pre-packaged answers, or running through endless question drills.

Instead, we break down what interviewers are really looking for, so you can craft responses that feel authentic and show who you truly are.

We take you through near-identical interview scenarios that mimic the exact pressure and unpredictability of your real interview.

Every session is designed to push you—not just rehearse answers, but to think on your feet, handle curveballs, and find your voice.

It’s about making sure that when you walk into your interview, it feels like the 100th time, not the first.

We don’t just prepare you for the questions—they become second nature. By the time you’re done, it won’t be about memorising answers, but about showing up fully prepared, confident, and uniquely you.

That’s what makes the difference.

And you'll feel this difference during your interview.

Interview Anxiety → Confident Delivery

Unorganised Answers → Structured Responses

Irrelevant Ideas → Precise & Pinpointed Content

Unguided Study → Focused Practice with Real Examples

Lack of Improvement → Personalised Feedback & Coaching

Hey, I'm Ramodh, and I can't wait to turn your dreams of Medicine into a reality!

As a current Monash Medical Student, I’ve seen first-hand how daunting and over-complicated the entry process into medicine can be, and the hours of daily preparation that students often put in.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Personally, I adopted a completely different approach, which focused on developing the skills and mindset needed to succeed in medicine entry.

During the program, we'll focus on these exact high-yield methods of Interview Preparation.

Through engaging tutoring and personalised support, I'll make it my goal to give you (or your son/daughter) a clear pathway on how to prepare for Medical Interviews, and get the result you deserve.

Together we’ll maximise your chances of getting into medicine.

Imagine having your own dictionary of suggested responses, techniques, tips and strategies to refer to while preparing.

That's what we're offering—almost a dozen workbooks filled with battle-tested responses and methods.

Access to Daily 1-Hour Small-Group Practical Lessons

Valued at $1000+ ℹ️

No matter how much you learn from our workshops, what matters the most for your interview preparation is practice. Yet, you might be wondering, how exactly am I going to do so much practice? Would I try to do it by myself? Should I ask a friend every time? With my parents? In the mirror? How will I get good feedback? Am I practising the right thing? Are my responses even good? Why am I not improving?

The reality is, it is incredibly frustrating and difficult to organise effective practice sessions for your interview preparation, and many students end up trying to do it all by themselves. This is completely unrealistic, and you often miss out on receiving proper feedback to help you improve! To solve this problem, we’ve introduced a new addition to our 2025 Interview Program; Daily 1-Hour Small Group Practical Lessons run by our Expert Interview Tutors.

  • Select a Lesson Time: Once you sign up, you’ll select a specific daily 1-hour lesson time (same time every day) with a specific Interview Tutor. You don’t have to attend every single day (but are more than welcome to), and if you can’t make your assigned time then you’re welcome to join a different lesson for that day.
  • Setting the Focus: At the start of your session, the tutor will recap what we’re covering in the program at that stage, and will set a specific focus for your group to work on during the practice. This makes sure you’re always practising the right thing, at the right time.
  • Practising in Pairs: Under the direct supervision of your tutor, you’ll complete practice in pairs in Zoom breakout rooms. This lets you experience the role of both interviewer and interviewee, and to gain effective feedback from your peers.
  • Discussion of Every Practice Station: At the end of each session, your tutor will lead a high-yield small-group discussion of each practice station. We’ll discuss common feedback, major takeaways from the station, and actionable improvements for your preparation, ensuring you keep progressing.

By attending these lessons for just an hour every day, you’ll be miles ahead of the vast majority of other applicants, who are left frustrated with a lack of consistent practice. This is the most effective way to complete consistent and high-impact practice, and we encourage you to make the most of it!

Free Bonus #2

200+ Model Response Videos, Over 25+ Hours of Content!

Valued at $1000+ ℹ️

These model responses have been carefully recorded by our experienced medical student MMI Tutors, who were all incredibly successful in their interviews (as they gained offers into med!). Of course, there are many unique ways to score a 5/5 on an interview question, but these videos are a great example of exactly what that looks like.

  • Recognise the Standard: See what a high-scoring response looks like, and understand the key elements that make it stand out. Through this, you can identify exactly what it takes to craft stand out answers under pressure, providing you with a clear, actionable blueprint to elevate your own performance.
  • Bridge the Gap: As soon as you complete a practice station, you can directly compare your responses to the model responses. By pinpointing the key differences, you can accurate identify your weaknesses and bridge the gap with every response.
  • Immediate Application: Learn specific strategies for structure, content and delivery which can be implemented directly into your own practice, refining your approach with every model response you watch.

Model Responses aren’t just examples—they’re an actionable roadmap to mastering your interviews with confidence and clarity. Dive in, learn from the best, and get ready to shine in your interviews!

Free Bonus #3

After you sign up, we’ll save your spot in the program and place you on our list for the 2025 Interview Program. We’ll reach out closer to the commencement of the program with further details to officially enrol and kick-start your interview preparation!

By saving your spot, you’ll be the first to know when enrolments officially open!

The Head-Start Schedule is recommended if you want to be fully prepared before late November interviews (e.g. Monash DRL, UNSW Rural, JMP’s) or have a busy schedule later (e.g. due to holidays).

The Standard Schedule is perfect for most students, as we recommend focusing on year 12 exams, then committing completely to interview preparation immediately after!

You will be able to select your schedule once you’re officially enrolled in the program. If you would like to change your schedule during the program, then this is fine, you’ll just need to email medprep@contoureducation.com.au so we can update your preferences on our system!

The main difference you’ll find is that we’re incredibly comprehensive. While you can find practice sessions, practice stations and feedback in any interview preparation program, you won’t find another program which includes absolutely everything we do. For example, being able to attend daily small-group practical lessons, getting daily 1-on-1 video feedback and having an online platform for realistic practice on-demand are just some of the features which make our program unique. We’re also young and energetic medical students who were in the same position as you, and will always have a friendly and encouraging to support you throughout the program!

We have highly limited spots for our 2025 Program, so the best time to express interest is now so you can be first to hear when enrolments open. The earlier you register, the more likely you are to get your preferred schedule for workshops, practical lessons and mock exams!

This is a question we get asked almost every day as Interview tutors; “Is it even worth preparing for interviews if my UCAT score is low? Should I just wait until I get an interview offer?”.

To answer that question, we’d like to be as clear and direct as possible. If you have a low UCAT/ATAR, then the reality is that only 4 pathways remain for your preparation:

  • Outcome 1: Insufficient Interview Preparation + No Interview Offer => No Entry Into Medicine
  • Outcome 2: Effective Interview Preparation + No Interview Offer => No Entry Into Medicine
  • Outcome 3: Insufficient Interview Preparation + Received Interview Offer => No Entry Into Medicine
  • ✅ Outcome 4: Effective Interview Preparation + Received Interview Offer => Entry Into Medicine

So as you can see, the only way to achieve your dream of getting into medicine next year is to have both components, Effective Interview Preparation AND an Interview Offer.

Why is that? Look, the reality is that with a lower UCAT/ATAR, you really need to ace your interview to get in. Out of everyone in the interview stage of the application process, if you’re in the lower third of UCAT/ATAR results, then logically speaking, you’d want to be in at least the upper third of interview results to make up for it! Unlike other students, you don’t have the luxury of having a ‘decent’ interview and just relying on your UCAT/ATAR, you need to aim for an excellent interview with one of the highest interview scores in the selection process.

So what should I do? The good news is that hundreds of students every year get UCAT/ATAR scores which would typically be considered ‘low’, but still get into medicine through effective interview preparation. So don’t worry, it’s definitely possible and we genuinely believe that you can do it. However, we won’t lie to you, it would be very difficult to do without consistent and effective interview preparation, starting well before you even get an interview offer. To put it simply, if your UCAT/ATAR isn’t as high as you hoped, then your interview preparation needs to be much more comprehensive than other applicants in order for you to have a good chance of getting in.

Ok, but if I don’t get an interview offer, wouldn’t all this preparation go to waste? Great question! Remember, the goal of your interview preparation isn’t to guarantee acing your interview and getting a spot in medicine. You’re preparing for the interview so that you could have a chance of getting in, and to give yourself the opportunity to succeed if you were to get an interview offer.

So yes, if you were to never get an interview offer, then the time and energy you dedicate to your interview preparation won’t ever shine through in a real interview. This means that if you prepare for the interview, you might not get into medicine, especially if you don’t get an interview offer.

But what’s the alternative? If you do not prepare for the interview, you almost certainly won’t get into medicine, regardless of whether you get an interview offer! Why? Because you need to do incredibly well in your interview to get in, and that requires comprehensive preparation. Not preparing would be a similar option to just giving up.

So remember, if you don’t prepare until you get an interview offer, then you run the risk of losing the opportunity to succeed in your interview and get into medicine. Whilst we can’t guarantee that you’ll get an interview offer, we really encourage you to just give yourself a chance of success by taking interview preparation seriously, rather than writing yourself off way too early.

To be honest, these days this question isn’t anywhere near as common as it used to be. Most students have realised just how important the interview is, regardless of their UCAT/ATAR, and are taking it seriously. However, every year, some students with 99.95 ATARs and 99th percentile UCATs are left devastated when university offers come out in January, and they regret not taking the interview seriously.

How does the interview have such a big impact? This is because for most universities, the interview is worth around 25-50% of your application! For example, for Monash, the MMI is worth 1/3 of the whole application process, the same as the UCAT & ATAR! To quantify this, a single 10 minute MMI station matters more than your whole Year 12 English Exam! Just let that actually sink in. Think about all of the work you’ve done for your English Exam, all the classes and practice essays. All of that has the same impact on you becoming a doctor as the 10 minutes you spend talking to an MMI interviewer!

When we tell you this, we genuinely have no intention of scaring or alarming you. We know that if you’re reading this, chances are you’ve worked very hard this year to be a high-achiever, and we’re so proud of you for that! We just really don’t want all of that hard work to go to waste and we want to make sure you’re rewarded with what you deserve; a spot in medicine. Not too long ago, we were in the same position as you, so we know how it feels to be so close to what you’ve been studying all year to achieve, with just the interview in your way! So keep up your hard-working attitude and give your all to your interview preparation, because trust us, it makes a big difference.

You can, but we wouldn’t recommend it. If you search up “medicine interview preparation” online you’ll find heaps of websites, resources, YouTube videos and blog articles. Some of these might genuinely be useful, but a lot of it is often outdated, confusing or inaccurate practice material! Interview formats, especially MMIs, change frequently, and you need resources that reflect the most accurate scenarios, university-specific guidelines, and proven strategies.

The problem is, whilst almost all students recognise the value of practice, they don’t realise that realistic practice is key to their success. If you’re doing a lot of practice, but practising the wrong thing, then your practice is making you worse rather than better! For example, some free online platforms might give you panel-style interview questions when you’re preparing for an MMI, or they might skip critical nuances like how to manage reading time before answering a scenario-based question. It’s like training for a sprint, but preparing with long-distance running drills!

That’s why it’s super important to choose realistic, high-quality resources that mimic the actual interview environment. This is something we pride ourselves on at Contour, and hopefully from the rest of this website you can see exactly how realistic our resources and lessons are, run by our professional team of doctors and medical students!

We certainly agree that it is near impossible to do well on the interview without a large amount of practice. However, a lot of students falsely assume that the fastest and most reliable way to improve is purely through practice. This couldn’t be further from the truth! The reality is that just like any subject, it’s a lot faster and easier to improve by first learning the fundamental principles and strategies involved, and then applying it to your practice.

For example, take the structure of your responses. You could keep trying and trying through lots of practice to get to a perfectly structured response, or, you could simply learn some tried and tested frameworks that apply to lots of different question types. In the course, we discuss structure in depth, and we teach you specific frameworks which you can apply directly into your practice!

As one more example, let’s consider content. Yes, it’s important to have authentic and genuine content in your responses. However, wouldn’t it be useful to learn about some medical ethics principles and rural/Indigenous health issues before they ask about them in the interview? This is where arming yourself with a strong knowledge base can significantly improve the quality of your responses, rather than relying solely on doing lots of practice.

It might seem like a great idea to have a perfect answer memorised for every possible question, but the truth is, not only is this impossible, but interviewers can tell when you’re regurgitating a memorised response! Remember, they want to see how you think, not how well you’ve rehearsed.

Also, it’s crucial for you to understand that there is no such thing as a “correct answer” when it comes to an interview response. Why? Because the interviewers aren’t looking for the best response to every scenario, the scenarios and questions are simply a tool through which they get to know your personality and values! So when you memorise answers, you might think that the good points you made will get you a high score, but interviewers will see a lack of passion and creativity in your scripted responses, and that doesn’t score very well!

The worst part? Not only will you sound robotic and disengaged, but when you get asked an unexpected question, you might get thrown off completely and struggle to adjust!

What’s the solution? Focus on frameworks, not scripts. Instead of learning a word-for-word answer, you should practise flexible structures that allow you to build genuine and adaptable responses. That way, no matter how the question is phrased, you’ll be able to respond with confidence, and your answers will sound authentic every time!

A common misconception that many students have is that they can prepare effectively by only practising on their own or with friends. While that certainly helps, it’s often not enough. You need to simulate the real interview experience by completing perfectly simulated mock interviews, with detailed scoring and feedback from experienced medical students and doctors as the mock interviewers.

How do Mock Interviews help?

  • Experience the Stress and the Nerves: In the actual interview, you’ll be under pressure. There’s a huge difference between practising at home and being put on the spot in front of an interviewer. If you’ve used mock interviews to your advantage, then when you walk into your real interview, you should feel like it’s your 100th time, not your first.
  • Complete Near-Identical Practice Stations: When you’re in your real interview, you want every scenario you see and every question you get asked to feel almost the exact same as what you did in your preparation! With high-quality mock interviews, this is exactly what you can expect :)
  • Receiving Scores and Feedback: Without receiving accurate scores and detailed feedback from an experienced mock interviewer, how would you know whether you’re on track to do well in your interview? This is one of the most important aspects of your preparation, as it will direct you towards exactly what you need to focus on to master the interview!
  • Learn from Doctors and Medical Students: Practising with friends and family is great, but what’s even better is practising with people who were in the exact same position as you, and succeeded in their interviews. These doctors and medical students would know exactly what it takes to ace your interview, and would be there to answer all of your questions and give personalised feedback.

If there’s anything you remember from those 3 dot points, it should be that completing mock interviews before the real deal is the best way to fine-tune your skills and feel 100% prepared. We say this based on my experience having run mock interviews for hundreds of students over the past few years, as our Mock Interviews are notorious for being the highlight and absolute pinnacle of our whole Interview Program! You can find more details about these mock interviews by scrolling up to their section on this website.
